After spending the last 6 months helping startup Vizolution build on their considerable success in the UK by growing into North America\, I was presented an unexpected and unenviable choice. Should I continue with Vizolution and the plan of using some of their new fundraise to build a team and business or should I work again with my former boss and now friend to continue the transformation at Tangoe\, a market leader in Telecom Expense Management\, who are in the process of addressing serious challenges? Either choice had positives for me but choosing was sure to let down someone I respected and to whom I felt an obligation. And I had about a day to make up my mind. \nMy head was swirling with pluses and minuses. Help! Some sort of framework was necessary to organize my thoughts. And that is when two plus years of working with a professional coach (Angie Pincin) paid off. Specifically\, it was the hard work of determining what are my core values and how to then apply those core values that helped me make this decision. \nFirst\, what is a core value? I have come to understand that a core value stays with you all your life. When you allow these values to be compromised\, at best you don’t do your best work and more likely\, you are anxious\, angry and unproductive. On the flip side\, I now understand that when you ensure your core values are respected you are calm\, positive and likely to do great work. \nI don’t want to minimize how hard this value identification exercise is when done correctly. For example\, my first list of values included family. Who wouldn’t say that family belongs as a core value? But was it really core to me? When my coach posed the question of would I confer with my wife before accepting any new job opportunity\, I knew that family didn’t belong on my list. No disrespect intended but I have always made my own career decisions. Anyway\, after months of this type of testing\, my core values are personal growth\, achievement\, influence\, autonomy and integrity. \nAnd so I applied the filter of my core values to each opportunity. Yes\, they would both allow me to grow. Yes\, I would be able with both to collaborate on goals but have enough autonomy to execute without excessive oversight. Yes\, both work environments are one where words and actions matched. The difference was that one opportunity gives me a greater chance to have broad influence on the company’s direction and ultimately the success we can achieve. Without my own value framework\, this may have been an easier or harder decision but certainly not a better informed decision. So on to Tangoe I go while wishing my former colleagues at Vizolution great success. \nSometimes I am asked if professional coaching is worth it. I ask you\, what is the cost of being in the wrong job? Of being unhappy and ultimately unproductive? I can’t put a dollar amount on it for myself or my employer but I sure would make that investment again.
